Partly, yes. Free tools can cover your own site's backlinks, but I'm not aware of a free option that matches a paid tool for competitor research. Check Backrefs' official site for any current free plan or trial, since offers change.
What free options cover
| Option | Good for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Seeing links Google reports for a site you own | Your site only, and it's a sample rather than a full link index |
| Ahrefs Webmaster Tools | Backlink and site audit data for sites you verify | Verified sites only, so no competitor spying |
| Limited free tiers from other vendors | Occasional spot checks | Query limits and reduced data; confirm current limits on each vendor's site |
A workflow that costs nothing
- Verify your site in Google Search Console and open the Links report.
- Export top linking sites and top linked pages. Repeat monthly so you can spot new or lost links.
- Verify the same site in Ahrefs Webmaster Tools and compare the two lists. Each tool finds links the other misses.
- Flag anything odd, such as sudden spikes from unfamiliar domains, and review it by hand.
Recommended for youBest Backrefs Alternatives: Top Backlink Tools ComparedWhere free runs out
Free tools mostly can't show a competitor's backlinks, so link-gap analysis and prospecting are the first things you'll miss. Reporting for clients, history and scale are the next. If those matter to your work, a paid tool earns its cost. If you only monitor one or two of your own sites, free may be enough.
I wouldn't promise that either route improves rankings. These tools show you data, and you still have to act on it.
If you decide to pay
Compare cost against the features you'll actually use, not the longest feature list. Our pricing comparison by cost per feature is a good place to start, and the cheapest alternative page covers the budget end. Confirm all current prices and limits on each vendor's official site before you buy.
